A new Dover History Trail is launched today, which can be followed for free using a mobile phone. It offers visitors and local people the opportunity to explore the town’s rich past by simply scanning a QR code to download an app. The app leads to fascinating historic information online and directions to each location.

The trail follows the existing historic information town panels, which have recently been updated, in 22 locations across Dover. Readers are guided through the town with an interactive map that connects stories and pictures to the places where they happened.

The trail has been designed to help people explore beyond familiar landmarks and discover the wider history of the town, from well-known sites to lesser-known locations of significance.

The trail is delivered through an interactive, location-based platform, allowing content to be accessed where it happened, and updated over time. It has been funded by the European Space Agency and is the second project delivered by Dover District Council working in partnership with Gazooky Studios. Last year the Coastal Voices trail was launched, which is still available in Dover.

To access the Dover History Trail, simply scan the QR code to download the free Gazooky TimeWalks app.

Rose Kay from the studios said: “It has been a privilege to work on the Dover History Trail and to contribute in a small way to the town’s tourism and cultural life. Dover has an extraordinary history, and what makes this trail special is that people can experience stories in the places where they actually happened. Our aim has been to create something accessible, engaging and rooted in the character of Dover itself.”

Anita Sedgewick from DDC’s Place and Growth team, said: “As visitors move through Dover, they can access engaging, place-specific content that reveals the layers of heritage shaping the town today. The approach creates a living, accessible layer of heritage that supports tourism, education and local engagement.”

The Dover History Trail is now live and freely accessible to anyone visiting the town.
