Request

Q1) Please advise, based on your business rates database, how many tattoo-specific premises or tattoo studios were known to you for each financial year for the past 10 years.

Q2a) Please can you advise, based on your Environmental Health records, how many premises were registered with you in order to provide tattooing services or were tattoo studios, during each financial year for the past 10 years under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 (LGMPA 1982).

Please note that tattooing is considered alongside acupuncture, electrolysis, semi-permanent skin colouring, and piercing to be referred to more broadly as a ‘special treatment’, which is regulated by the above Act.

Q2b) Please can you advise, based on your Environmental Health records regarding the above premises, how many individual practitioners were registered with you in order to provide tattooing services or were working within tattoo studios, during each financial year for the past 10 years under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 (LGMPA 1982)?

Response

Please note, the numbers for questions 2(a) and (b) are based on our licensing records for registrations.  These figures may not accurately reflect the number of premises operating during the requested periods, as the Council is not always notified when a premises closes.  In line with our retention policy, any premises registered within the last 10 years, but who cancelled the registration more than five years ago will not appear, as that data has been deleted.  Additionally, for applications made prior to 2024, we are unable to separate activity types. As a result, the figures include all health-related registrations, such as piercing, tattooing, acupuncture, and similar activities.
