‘Rise and Thrive’ is a free one‑day event being held at the Maison Dieu (Dover Town Hall) dedicated to veterans, ex‑military personnel, reservists, and cadets from the Dover District and beyond.

Taking place on Saturday 7 February, the day will offer tailored support, opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences, and guidance for those adjusting to civilian life.

A highlight of the event will be guest speaker Hari Budha Magar, who will share his extraordinary story of recovery, ambition, and strength. A former soldier of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, Hari lost both legs in 2010 after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) while serving in Afghanistan. On 19 May 2023, he made history as the first double above‑knee amputee to summit Mount Everest — a remarkable testament to resilience and determination.

The day will include:

  • Motivational speakers with lived experience of transition and resilience
  • Specialist support agencies, including Royal British Veterans Enterprises, LifeWorks, RBL Dover, the Royal Marines Association, Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the Army Recruitment Team, and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), offering guidance on mental health, employment, housing, and wellbeing
  • Opportunities to build community connections, combat isolation, and celebrate service

Tickets are free to book and allocated on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Dover District Council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, a voluntary pledge of mutual support between the civilian community and its local armed forces community. The Covenant complements the national commitment to ensuring that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect.

Armed Forces Champion at DDC, Cllr Gordon Cowan, said: “Our Armed Forces community has given so much, and it is our duty to ensure they feel supported, valued, and connected. Rise and Thrive is about bringing people together, offering practical help, and celebrating the incredible strength and service of those who protect our nation. I encourage veterans, serving personnel, and all connected to them to join us for what promises to be an inspiring and uplifting day.”
