Report a dangerous structure

We are responsible for making sure any dangerous structures reported to us in the Dover district are dealt with so they do not pose a risk to people nearby.

A dangerous structure is something that presents a serious risk to public safety due to its condition or the way it's being used. This could be a whole building or part of one.

Dangerous buildings can be a result of various issues, including:

  • the age of the building/structure
  • vehicle impact
  • weather damage
  • fire damage
  • vandalism
  • poor maintenance or neglect.

If you are concerned about a structure, it's important you report it so it can be assessed and appropriate action taken.

Reporting a dangerous structure

Building control is not responsible for trees or highways and we ask that you report these to the appropriate department/organisation by following the links below.

For a dangerous structure or building, you can report it to our building control team by using the form below.

Report a dangerous structure (opens in new tab)

If the structure is in need of urgent repair contact us on 01304 872495 between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. If you are reporting outside of this timeframe, contact our out-of-hours team on 01304 821199.

What happens next

When a potentially dangerous structure is reported, a building control surveyor will visit the site as soon as possible to assess the situation and any risks. If there is an immediate danger, such as a wall that could collapse, we can take action to remove the risk. This may include arranging for the structure to be made safe, fenced off or demolished if necessary.

If the structure is in a poor condition but is not considered dangerous at the time of inspection, we will normally advise the owner to carry out repairs within a reasonable timescale or take formal steps to require the work to be done.
