The council tax you pay goes towards local services such as policing, fire services, education, parks and household rubbish collections.
The amount you pay depends on where you live, which band your home is given and if you are entitled to any discounts or exemptions.
What is a band?
The band for your home is printed on your council tax bill. The banding is decided by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not the council.
The VOA places every home into a band based on roughly what its selling price would have been on 1 April 1991. This means changes in today’s property prices won’t affect your band.

Council tax charges
In this area, a 'precept' is a charge collected on behalf of Dover District Council, Kent County Council, The Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent, Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority and our parish councils.
We collect the council tax on behalf of all these authorities.
