Temporary accommodation

If we place you, we will make contact with our providers to establish what is available at that particular time. It is likely you will be offered accommodation on a nightly paid basis until the outcome of your application, or until you find suitable accommodation.

We will always try to keep any household within the Dover district, however this is not always possible due to the shortage of suitable emergency accommodation.

The accommodation will be available to you until you are successfully placed elsewhere or until the council no longer owes a duty to accommodate you.

The amount you will be required to pay for temporary accommodation will depend on the type of accommodation you are placed into.

Your housing options officer will explain the charges to you at the time of your placement and you will need to make an application for housing benefit or Universal Credit. Payment of charges are monitored by our temporary accommodation team.

You can bring any personal belongings with you, such as clothing, however the majority of properties are furnished.

If you are unsure about what you can bring, you can speak to our temporary accommodation team.

You will need to contact the landlord for your accommodation depending upon who this may be. The relevant contact information will be given to you by your provider when you are placed in temporary accommodation.

Most of our providers will not allow you to bring your pet.

You may need to explore whether a friend or family member can temporarily foster your pet. Please be aware that we do not have a duty to accommodate pets, and the majority of providers will not accept pets in their properties.
