Amendments to the BNG regime: Amendments to the BNG regime have come into force for all new applications from 6 August 2026. These pages will be updated in due course. See up to date information via the government website www.gov.uk/guidance/biodiversity-net-gain (opens in new tab)

Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach to development that leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was before the development occurred.

Under the Environment Act 2021, all planning permissions granted in England, with a few exemptions, will have to deliver 10% biodiversity net gain. This is known as mandatory biodiversity net gain and developers will be required to demonstrate that proposals deliver BNG.
