Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach to development that leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was before the development occurred.
Under the Environment Act 2021, all planning permissions granted in England, with a few exemptions, will have to deliver 10% biodiversity net gain. This is known as mandatory biodiversity net gain and developers will be required to demonstrate that proposals deliver BNG.
