Self Build and Custom Build

Dover District Council are committed to supporting increased access to housing throughout the district. This includes those wishing to build their own homes.

The definition for a Self / Custom Build is; a dwelling built to completion by:

  • Individual(s)
  • Associations of individuals such as cohousing.
  • Persons working with individuals or associations of individuals who plan on occuping the completed dwelling.

It does not include anyone who is not intending to occupy the competed dwelling themselves or as part of a group of individuals.

The Self Build Register

The Self Build Register is used to coordinate planning policy efforts to ensure that the self-build needs of those on the register are met through relevant planning permissions.

The Local Plans Team at Dover District Council have an obligation to monitor the Self Build need within the District. For this reason, it is important that we have an understanding of how many Self Build / Custom Build have taken or will take place over 5 years.
