Your right to information
Under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, you can ask to see recorded information held by us.
We will consider every request and provide the information where we can. In some cases, information cannot be disclosed because an exemption applies under the Act.
What you can request
Anyone can request information – there are no restrictions on your age, nationality or where you live.
You can request any recorded information that we hold, for example information in emails, letters and data, and you do not have to explain why you want the information.
Before you make a request
Before submitting your FOI request, check our disclosure log first as the information you require may already be publicly available.
We also proactively publish information via our Publication Scheme which contains information we routinely make available.
Submit a Freedom of Information request
If you can't find the information you need, you can submit your FOI request.
Please provide as much information as possible to help us identify and locate the information you are requesting.

Depending on the type of information you request, different legislation may apply.
- Data Protection Act: if you want information we hold about you. In this case, use our subject access request form (opens in new tab)
- Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs): if you want environmental information. These requests can be made in the same way as a Freedom of Information request.
Response time
We will respond to your request within 20 working days of receiving it. If we need more time, we will let you know.
If your request is complex, we may need more time to respond. If this happens, we will let you know.
Some information may be exempt from disclosure, but we will explain why and advise you on any next steps.
Fees
In some circumstances, we may charge a fee for providing information. This may include costs for printing, photocopying, postage or other expenses incurred in supplying the information.
If a fee applies, we will let you know before processing your request. In some cases, fees may be waived.
If you are unhappy with our response
If you are not satisfied with our decision, for example if your request has been refused, you can ask us to carry out an internal review.
You must request an internal review within 40 working days of our decision.
