New payment machines

From October 2026, we are introducing new, improved parking payment machines across our car parks and on-street pay and display bays. As part of this move, we will remove the option to pay by cash.

When will this happen?

The changes are being agreed with our supplier and we are expecting new machines to be installed across the district from the start of October. The aim is to have all new machines in place by the end of November 2026.

From this date, cash payments will no longer be accepted at parking machines.

However, you will still have a range of convenient payment options.

How can I pay for parking?

Why are we making this change?

We recognise that removing cash as a payment option could impact some residents, particularly those who are elderly or less confident with digital technology. However, we have carefully considered this and are ensuring that a range of alternative payment methods remain available, including contactless card payments and pay‑by‑phone options, so that people are not reliant on apps or smartphones alone.

Cash usage for parking has reduced significantly in recent years and continues to decline, reflecting wider changes in how people choose to pay. As a council, we have a duty to respond to these changes while also ensuring that we are delivering services in the most efficient and cost‑effective way.

Handling cash is increasingly expensive, requiring collection, security and maintenance of machines. By moving to cashless payments, we can reduce these costs and reinvest resources into maintaining and improving parking services for everyone.

This is a balanced decision that recognises the need to modernise services while putting mitigations in place to support those who may be affected. Ultimately, it is about ensuring we continue to provide a sustainable service and good value for taxpayers.
