Apply for building control approval

Building control ensures building work meets national standards for safety, health, energy efficiency and accessibility. If you’re planning building work, you may need to submit an application to our building control team before work starts.

On this page you’ll find out how to apply for building control approval as well as view the guidance notes applicable for each application type. There is also information about exemptions and statutory notices which may be required.

Apply

There are two ways to apply for building control approval, either through the national Planning Portal service or by completing our downloadable forms.

Notification and inspections

Once you have submitted a valid application, you can request a site visit so we can inspect your building work.

You must notify us at specific stages of the work.


Exemptions

If you think your project may be exempt, please complete our enquiry form and we will confirm either way.

Demolition

If your project involves demolition of a building, you or the person who intends to carry out the work needs to complete a Demolition Notice.
